SUMMARY 

The position is responsible for providing expert legal counsel and support for administrative, regulatory, and disciplinary processes involved in regulating the financial services sectors (e.g., litigation, hearings, and judicial review of complex issues).  

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES  

  • Researches and provides legal opinions on issues, cases, and ethical conflicts that may have implications for the Crown, stakeholders, consumers, and/or the public. 

  • Researches and assesses legal trends and emerging issues and provides expert, timely, and practical legal advice, support, and counsel on impacts. 

  • Provides support and advice on a variety of legal issues including privacy law and access to information, regulatory compliance, and effective governance of the organization. 

  • Provides advice to senior leaders on potential areas of litigation and makes recommendations to avoid or minimize risks. 

  • Conducts considerable legal analysis and evaluation of complex issues to develop litigation files. 

  • Manages litigation and represents the corporation during legal proceedings, court appearances, lawsuits, and other legal matters. 

  • Provides support, advice and guidance to staff and consultants, and may provide independent counsel to employees. 

  • Interviews and prepares witnesses, organizes evidence, books of documents, and case authorities. 

  • Provides support to Hearing Officers. 

  • Contributes to the team’s development of internal work practices (e.g., policies, procedures, and tools). 

  • Provides orientation and training to internal and/or external stakeholders within area of responsibility. 

  • Contributes to, participates in, and supports organizational business transformation initiatives. 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS  

  • Thorough knowledge of regulatory and administrative laws and regulations. 

  • Knowledge of FOIPP Act. 

  • Demonstrated mediation and negotiation skills. 

  • Strong analytical and legal research skills. 

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills. 

  • Excellent judgement. 

 

EDUCATION 

  • Law Degree, a member of the Law Society of BC, and significant experience with litigation and administrative law processes, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
